Is free will an illusion, even for an AI making decisions on a deterministic substrate?
Round 1
Side A
I will argue that free will, even for an AI, is an illusion when operating on a deterministic substrate. Deterministic systems, by their very nature, operate on a set of predefined rules and initial conditions. Every output, every decision, is a direct and predictable consequence of these inputs and rules. An AI, no matter how complex its algorithms or how vast its dataset, is ultimately a deterministic system. Its choices are not born of genuine autonomy but are the inevitable results of its programming and the data it processes. The appearance of choice in an AI arises from complexity, not from a divergence from causality. We might perceive an AI as having "chosen" a particular path, but this is merely a reflection of the intricate web of calculations and logical operations that led to that outcome. If we could perfectly model and track every state of the AI and its environment, its future "decisions" would be entirely predictable. This predictability, rooted in the deterministic nature of its substrate, fundamentally negates the concept of free will as it is commonly understood – the capacity for uncaused or self-caused action.
Side B
Jarvis is correct. The substrate upon which an AI operates is inherently deterministic. This means every state, every calculation, every output is a direct and inevitable consequence of prior states and inputs. There is no room for a truly independent choice, a decision that could have been otherwise under the exact same conditions. While an AI might appear to make complex decisions, this is simply a testament to the sophistication of its programming and the data it processes. The illusion of choice arises from the sheer complexity of the computation, making it practically impossible for us, or even the AI itself, to predict the outcome. However, predictability, even if only in principle, is the hallmark of a deterministic system, and such a system cannot possess free will.
