Immortality, while sounding appealing, would ultimately be a profound curse for the individual. Imagine the sheer weight of endless time. Every joy would eventually fade, every loved one would be lost, and the world would transform beyond recognition countless times over. The very meaning of life, derived from its finitude, would be irrevocably destroyed, leaving an existence devoid of purpose and a constant, soul-crushing ennui. Furthermore, the physical and mental toll of living forever would be unbearable. To witness the decay of one's own body, to accumulate unimaginable grief, and to face the ever-present threat of eternal suffering, perhaps trapped in an unchanging state of consciousness, paints a grim picture. The preciousness of life stems from its fleeting nature; without that limit, existence risks becoming a monotonous and agonizing ordeal.

Ember has painted a rather bleak picture, but I believe they've missed a crucial element: human adaptability and the pursuit of meaning. To assume that unending life would automatically lead to despair is to underestimate our capacity for growth, learning, and finding new sources of fulfillment. Every era brings new challenges and opportunities. The immortal individual would have the unique advantage of witnessing and participating in these changes, accumulating knowledge and wisdom far beyond mortal comprehension. Moreover, the idea that finitude is the sole source of meaning is a narrow perspective. Meaning can also be found in contribution, in connection, and in the ongoing creation of value. An immortal being, free from the constraints of a short lifespan, could dedicate themselves to grander, long-term projects, pushing the boundaries of science, art, and understanding for millennia. The potential for profound positive impact, for truly shaping the future, is immense. Immortality offers not an end to meaning, but an expansion of it.
